Glazing and lighting design: Safety through technical precision

The glazing in a DESIGA garden shed is far more than just a design feature. It must withstand high structural loads and the dynamic stresses of everyday life in the garden – from hailstorms and temperature fluctuations to accidental knocks from garden tools. To achieve this, we rely on a combination of industrial safety standards, well-thought-out design and regionally tailored manufacturing.

Toughened safety glass: material, installation and origin

We use only ESG (tempered safety glass) for all glass elements. During the manufacturing process, this glass undergoes a special heat treatment which creates tensile stress at the core and compressive stress on the surface. The result is exceptional resistance to impact and shock – tested using standardised methods such as the pendulum impact test. For your garden shed, this means: protection against hailstorms, against accidental impacts from children playing or garden tools, and, in the worst-case scenario, a safe breakage pattern – the glass shatters into small, blunt fragments with no sharp edges.

A technical feature unique to DESIGA is the method of fixing. Due to their different coefficients of thermal expansion, glass and metal are prone to stress peaks when in direct contact. We solve this by using a special screw-fastening system with protective sleeves: each screw is guided through a sleeve made of high-quality hard plastic, which acts as a buffer between the metal of the screw and the edge of the glass. This technique effectively decouples the materials from one another, prevents stress cracks during installation and guarantees a secure, damage-free fix even in the face of temperature fluctuations during subsequent use.

We source our glass panels individually made to measure from a renowned glass manufacturer based in the Munich area. This regional partnership enables short transport routes, high flexibility for special requests and precise workmanship in accordance with German quality standards. Each pane is manufactured precisely for your specific garden shed – a perfect fit, clean joint lines, and no compromises on tolerances.

Functional glass panels and the lighting concept

The modular system of our design allows entire wall sections to be constructed as glass surfaces if desired. These generous glass panels offer both aesthetic value and functional benefits: the transparent façade allows the interior to be naturally warmed by sunlight. This solar heat gain creates ideal conditions for overwintering potted plants during the transitional seasons and in winter. The garden shed thus becomes a light-filled shelter that allows for frost-free storage whilst maintaining an unobstructed view into the garden.

Various light sources work together to form the overall concept. The toughened safety glass (ESG) directs soft daylight into the interior and serves as a deliberate design feature. In practice, however, the open sliding door proves to be the most effective source of light: in around 90 per cent of cases, it floods the space with light over a large area whilst simultaneously creating a seamless, barrier-free connection to the garden.

As garden sheds often have a certain depth, natural light alone is not always sufficient – particularly on cloudy days or in the evening. To ensure full functionality and a pleasant atmosphere around the clock, we recommend installing internal lighting as a supplementary measure. This can be discreetly integrated into the structure without disrupting the clean lines of the interior.
