The garden cube – clean-lined storage in the Bauhaus spirit

A garden cube proves that storage need not be a design compromise. This project at the back of the garden shows the cube at its clearest: a deep anthracite HPL façade, precise edges, a flat roof – and a sliding door that carries the clean appearance through to the last detail. The building fits into its modern surroundings without pushing itself to the front, and it turns the far end of the plot into a considered part of the garden rather than a forgotten corner.

The sliding door: access without losing space

The sliding door glides parallel to the façade and, when open, does not project into the garden – no door leaf swinging over a bed or across a path. Precisely at the back of the garden, where paths are narrow and every surface is precious, the cube gains noticeable freedom of movement this way. Worth knowing for the planning stage: our sliding doors run on the inside and, for structural reasons, sit around 6 cm set back – something we build into the layout from the very beginning.

Paving all around: embedded rather than simply placed

Paving was laid around the entire building. The surrounding surface serves as access, manoeuvring zone and working area in one – for small repairs, for furniture waiting to be stored, or simply as a dry path around the building in wet weather. The cube is not just set down in the green, it is embedded in the garden design: one of those details that separates a real concept from a makeshift solution, and one that makes daily use noticeably more comfortable.

HPL by Trespa: form-stable and colour-stable in constant use

The HPL façade by Trespa is designed for permanent outdoor use. The surface stays form-stable and colour-stable even when the building works as storage all year round: no fading of the dark tone, no warping of the sliding door, no painting – the material is designed for a service life of around 50 years. Behind it, the load-bearing substructure of C24 structural timber is statically calculated in accordance with Eurocode 5.

The cube in your size

Our small garden shed forms the compact basis of the cube concept – available in standard sizes and made to measure, with a hinged or a sliding door, so the building follows your plot rather than the other way round. How the cube works as a free-standing solitaire with a perfectly square floor plan is shown by another of our reference projects; the version shown here demonstrates how naturally the same idea settles into the far end of a garden.

Form follows function: a natural match for modern homes

The strict cube stands in the tradition of the Bauhaus: flat roof, clean edges, no decorative elements – the form follows the function completely. A cube design shed therefore suits modern houses particularly well: white render, exposed concrete or dark window frames find their echo in the reduced building, which picks up the lines of the home instead of competing with them. The dark tone reinforces this effect – and the same look is just as conceivable in white or black, entirely in the spirit of classical modernism.

That freedom of tone is real: alongside the deep colour shown here, over 250 HPL colours and décors are available, from white to black, steel grey to wood-effect finishes. We send free samples to your home in advance, so you can judge your favourite in real daylight, against the house façade and the greens of the garden, before you decide.

Manufactured in Germany, set up across Europe

Every garden cube is developed in-house and manufactured in Germany. Delivery covers the whole of Europe, and on request our own assembly team sets the building up on site – or you assemble it yourself with the help of a detailed step-by-step video. More than 2,000 completed projects and a 5-star rating from over 220 Google reviews speak for that care. Would you like a design cube for your own garden?
