A garden shed with pergola combines function and leisure in a single, calm structure. In this project in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, the flat roof of the white garden shed continues seamlessly as an open pergola – out of the storage space grows a shaded seating area. Instead of two separate buildings with two roofs and two competing looks, one coherent building organises the garden: on one side the enclosed room for tools, furniture cushions and everything a garden accumulates, on the other an open, airy space to sit, eat and spend long summer evenings.
The pergola structures the garden without blocking it. Under the open roof, garden furniture stands protected from the glare of the midday sun; the posts give climbing plants something to hold on to; and towards the neighbouring plot, an airy privacy screen takes shape – green, light and permeable rather than closed and heavy. Because the construction connects directly to the garden shed, the route from the sun lounger to the storage space – for cushions, drinks or toys – is exactly one step. The result is a garden that feels organised without looking organised.
For shed and pergola to read as one building, the lines, heights and materials have to run through precisely: the same roof edge, the same post placement, the same HPL surface. A pergola added later rarely achieves this – the proportions drift apart, the joints show, and the ensemble falls back into two separate objects. We therefore plan both elements together from the first sketch. Size and cut follow the plot – as with all our made-to-measure garden sheds, the design adapts to your garden and not the other way round.
Dutch rain or a Bavarian winter – the HPL façade takes both in its stride. The material is weatherproof, UV-resistant and frost-proof, and the white stays bright without ever being repainted, impregnated or sanded. The load-bearing substructure is made of C24 structural timber, statically calculated in accordance with Eurocode 5 – including the freestanding pergola posts, which have to carry their share of the structure entirely on their own. Quality you do not see at first glance, but rely on for decades.
This project shows how far the concept travels: developed and manufactured in Bavaria, delivered and assembled in the Netherlands. Delivery and on-site assembly are available across Europe, so the finished quality does not depend on where your garden happens to be. The building is assembled on site and handed over ready to use – a finished ensemble rather than a stack of panels and an instruction sheet. The customer's verdict after completion was short and to the point: “I am really very very happy.”
The bright white shown here is only one option among more than 250 HPL colours and décors, from warm greys and deep black to wood-effect finishes – and free colour samples arrive at your home before you decide, so you can hold your favourite tone against the house façade and the greens of your garden. Shed and pergola can share one tone or set each other off deliberately.
Every DESIGA building is developed and manufactured in Germany. We deliver across Europe, and on request our own assembly team installs shed and pergola on site – alternatively, a detailed step-by-step assembly video guides you through the self-assembly.
