The communal bin store: when two households share one forecourt

Where two households live wall to wall, six or more wheelie bins soon gather in front of the doors – and somehow nobody feels responsible for the sight. This project shows a communal bin store as the answer: freestanding units for 240-litre bins that organise the bins of both neighbours and give the shared area in front of the houses a clear, calm structure. It works for two households in daily use – and it visibly upgrades the space both of them look at every day.

One plan instead of two makeshift answers

The usual pattern is familiar: each side improvises its own bin corner, and the result is two competing provisional solutions in one small space. Planned together, the picture changes completely. Every bin remains individually accessible and each household keeps its own compartments – but the street sees one coherent, uniform front. Agreeing on a single unit is not just cheaper in attention and space; it is the difference between two compromises and one solution. And because each side keeps its own doors and its own bins, the everyday routine stays entirely private – shared appearance, separate use.

Freestanding: placed where it suits both sides

Because the units stand entirely free – no house wall, no garage needed – they can be positioned wherever it works for both parties, typically on the line between the two entrances. Neither neighbour gives up their access, and the bins sit exactly on the shared middle ground they logically belong to. The freestanding build also means nothing has to be drilled into either façade, and the arrangement can respond to paths, planting and sightlines instead of to the nearest wall. On level or slightly uneven paving alike, the units stand precisely, with doors and lids closing cleanly.

Structure for the entrance – and a stage for the planting

The units do more than store bins: they draw a clean line between access, planting and bin place, and neatly frame the front gardens. The interplay with the greenery is a quiet highlight of this project – the plants no longer read as decoration next to a bin row, but as part of a composed overall picture in which the dark unit forms the calm backdrop.

Built for double duty: HPL by Trespa

A unit shared by two households is used twice as often – the material has to keep up. The HPL (high-pressure laminate) cladding by Trespa is UV-resistant, frost-proof and rain-proof; with an impact resistance of over 40 newtons it takes the daily handling of heavy 240-litre bins without complaint. It is never painted and never sealed – the calculated service life is around 50 years. That keeps the shared economics refreshingly simple: buy once, use for decades, argue never. There are no recurring maintenance weekends to divide up and no repainting rota – the unit simply stands there and does its job for both households.

Configurable for every neighbourly constellation

Every project draws on our bin store range and is planned around the bin count of both households – as one continuous row or as separate units, for 120-litre and 240-litre bins, on request with a letterbox or parcel compartment for each party. So whether you share a semi, a pair of terraced houses or a driveway, the layout follows your arrangement rather than forcing one on you.

With semi-detached and terraced homes in particular, the tone has to sit well against two façades at once: both parties choose from over 250 HPL colours and décors, and free colour samples are posted to your home in advance so the shade can be judged in place before anyone commits.

Two households, one straightforward process

Every unit is developed in-house and manufactured in Germany. Depending on size and preference, it arrives fully assembled by specialist carrier or is delivered and installed at its final position by our own team – either way, there is nothing for the neighbours to organise beyond agreeing on the spot.
