Anthracite log store – storing firewood with style

A firewood rack has to master two disciplines: keeping logs dry and well ventilated – and cutting a good figure in the garden while doing so. This project shows how a plain storage surface becomes a piece of design. The anthracite log store gathers the split logs into a calm, ordered plane and deliberately puts them on stage: the warm, irregular texture of the stacked wood plays against the straight-lined frame in deep anthracite HPL. The firewood supply stops being a necessary evil and becomes a focal point by the terrace, the house wall or the garden path.

Well ventilated and organised: how firewood dries properly

For logs to burn cleanly, their residual moisture needs to drop below 20 per cent – and that happens above all where air can circulate steadily. The DESIGA firewood rack is designed around exactly this: the open front and the clearance to the ground keep the whole stack breathing. The wood never lies on the earth but on a defined level, so standing water and rising damp stay out. If you heat regularly, you simply take the dry logs from the front and restack fresh wood as it arrives.

HPL: the weatherproof material for permanent outdoor duty

The rack is made from HPL (high-pressure laminate) by Trespa – the material we have committed ourselves to for more than a decade. HPL is a laminate pressed under high pressure, weatherproof, UV-resistant and frost-proof: the anthracite surface does not fade even after years in full sun, and rain simply washes dirt away. Unlike a timber rack, a firewood rack in anthracite HPL never needs painting, oiling or impregnating – it is permanently maintenance-free and designed for a service life of around 50 years. Right next to a stack of firewood, that is the decisive advantage: the rack does not age with the weather, it keeps its precise, cubic character.

Privacy screen, room divider or lean-to: more than a rack

A DESIGA log store can be considerably more than a place for logs. Freestanding, it becomes a room divider that structures terrace areas or shields unwanted views – the filled front reads as a living, natural wall. As a lean-to solution it connects directly to the house or a garden building and makes use of narrow leftover strips that would otherwise stay empty. And if you stock larger quantities or need space for kindling, baskets and tools as well, the rack can be combined with a closed compartment alongside.

What size should your firewood rack be?

How large the rack should be depends on how you heat. If you light the stove occasionally on cold evenings, a compact rack holding roughly one stacked cubic metre will do. If you heat regularly through the whole season, plan for several cubic metres – ideally arranged so that freshly delivered wood can finish drying in peace while the seasoned supply stays within reach. A wider rack can simply be divided into zones: stove-ready logs at the front, the replenishment next to them.
