Design Without Borders: a Modern Garden House in California

A modern garden house in California – design without borders

DESIGA buildings stand on both sides of the Atlantic. This project shows why: a modern garden house, developed and manufactured in Germany, now standing in a Californian garden. For the owners it is simply what they were looking for and could not find locally – a clean-lined, durable garden building that matches the standard of the main house instead of falling short of it.

Why a Californian home chose a German garden house

The American market knows sheds in every price class – what it rarely offers is a garden house understood as a designed building: precise edges, a flat roof, calm surfaces and proportions that follow the main residence. Homeowners who think in terms of design language will find in this concept the answer to their desire for a durable, refined addition to their property – one that stands confidently next to modern residential buildings rather than hiding behind the garage.

A high-quality extension of living space

The modern design garden house works as more than storage. Its clear, cubic design language makes the building an integral part of the property: a place for garden equipment and outdoor gear, a quiet room for projects, or simply a calm, well-ordered counterpart to pool and terrace. This not only enhances the residents’ quality of life – it visibly raises the standard of the entire outdoor area.

Holistic storage and aesthetic integration

The same idea extends to the details: storage is planned as a system, not as an afterthought. Interior layout, door positions and the relation of the building to paths and planting are designed together, so that the garden house, the garden and the residence read as one considered whole. These modern buildings are understood as part of an overall design for the property – creating a harmonious unity between home, garden and outdoor building.

HPL by Trespa: built for Californian sun

The façade is made from high-quality HPL (high-pressure laminate) by Trespa – a material developed for building exteriors and a decisive advantage under intense sun: UV-resistant, colour-fast and completely maintenance-free. No repainting, no fading, no warping – the material is designed to keep its precision and colour for 50 years and more, whether it faces Bavarian rain or Californian heat. You will find every format, from compact cube to made-to-measure build, in our garden shed range.

Delivered across the Atlantic, assembled on site

This project proves the concept travels: precisely prefabricated in Germany, shipped overseas and assembled on site – guided by a detailed step-by-step assembly video and documentation that make the build manageable without specialist trades – the same proven process we use for deliveries across Europe. The engineering behind it is the same as for every DESIGA building: a statically engineered, load-bearing timber substructure built to strict German engineering standards.
