Sometimes, the difference between a garden cupboard and a garden shed is just the width of a door: this Cube garden shed in Pforzheim functions like a walk-in garden cupboard with sliding doors – and makes the most of its compact footprint in a way that seems almost impossible on paper. Two large sliding doors open up the front almost completely; behind them lies not a dark storage space, but a highly organised storage area where every square centimetre is put to good use.
The key difference from traditional garden sheds is the large opening at the front. Instead of reaching into the darkness through a narrow door, you simply slide the doors open and have all your tools and equipment right in front of you – from the lawnmower to the watering can. No need to climb inside, no need to rearrange things: the convenience of everyday gardening is noticeably enhanced because the interior functions like an open shelf.
There’s a clever design advantage in the door positioning: the sliding doors each start 50 cm from the outer edges. This creates ideal storage space on the short sides of the shed, where shelving systems up to 40 cm deep can be fitted across the full height. This means no space is wasted on unnecessary walkways – the Cube garden shed becomes a maximally compact storage area for anyone who wants to fit a lot in a compact footprint.
The façade is made of HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) from Trespa – UV-resistant, frost-proof and rainproof. The surface does not fade; dirt is washed away by the rain, and there is never any need for painting or waterproofing; it is designed to last around 50 years. This dimensional stability directly benefits the sliding doors: as the material does not warp, the doors continue to glide smoothly along their tracks even after many years. Good to know: our sliding doors run on the inside and, due to their design, are set back by around 6 cm – this is taken into account in the interior layout.
The principle scales up: our small garden shed is available in standard sizes up to around 4.5 m² and made to measure – from the compact cube shown here to a larger tool shed. Our case study of an exclusive tool shed with double sliding doors demonstrates how two sliding doors define a bespoke project in Ulm.
