In a semi-detached house, the terrace boundary is a delicate zone: you sit back to back with your neighbours, often only a few metres apart, and still want to have breakfast, read or entertain guests undisturbed. This project in Otterfing shows a solution that does more than a fence ever could. A large terrace cabinet in HPL stands as a privacy screen with storage exactly on the boundary line – creating confident privacy on one side and delivering the storage space that terraces chronically lack on the other.

One structure, two jobs: screening and storing

A classic screening fence divides – and does nothing else. The terrace cabinet uses the same footprint twice. Towards the neighbours, the closed back panel forms an opaque, solid screen at full height. Towards the owners’ terrace, the doors open onto generous storage as a garden divider: seat cushions, pillows, garden tools and barbecue accessories all disappear behind a calm front. The terrace ends up tidy in both directions – no view in from outside, no clutter in view from the table. Where a fence would simply consume the boundary strip, the cabinet earns its footprint back every single day.

Solid, stable and opaque – even in wind

Unlike lightweight screening walls of fabric or thin timber, this cabinet is a solid piece of furniture that stands on its own. The construction rests on adjustable feet that level out unevenness in the terrace surface. The closed HPL face stays opaque, does not warp and does not rattle in the wind – a screen that presents itself after years exactly as it did on day one, without tensioning, tightening or replacing.

HPL by Trespa: weatherproof 365 days a year

The cabinet is made from HPL (high-pressure laminate) by Trespa – a material that originally comes from façade construction and is designed for permanent exposure to the weather. It is UV-resistant, frost-proof and rainproof: the surface does not fade, rain washes dirt away, and painting or oiling is never required. Cushions and upholstery stay dry inside and can remain outdoors all year round. The material is calculated for a service life of around 50 years – the screen ages no faster than the house it belongs to.

Planned to the millimetre: terrace width, boundary line, local rules

For a cabinet to work as a property divider, height, width and depth have to be exactly right – in relation to the terrace, to the course of the boundary and to the local rules for screening along it. That is why every cabinet in our garden cabinet range is planned to measure: from a slim tall unit to a room-forming wall of storage like the one in this project. The same principle adapts to detached houses, too, wherever a terrace needs a calm back and a practical core. Doors, compartments and interior layout follow how the storage will actually be used – deep space for cushions, narrower sections for tools and accessories.
