In semi-detached houses, the terrace boundary is a tricky area: you sit back-to-back with your neighbours, often just a few metres apart – yet you still want to enjoy breakfast, read or entertain guests in peace. This project in Otterfing showcases a solution that does more than just a fence: a large HPL patio cupboard acts as a privacy screen, positioned precisely on the property boundary, ensuring ample privacy – whilst at the same time providing the storage space that is chronically lacking on patios.
A traditional privacy fence simply separates – nothing more. The patio cupboard makes dual use of the same space: facing the neighbours, the solid rear panel forms a full-height, opaque privacy screen. Facing your own patio, the doors open to reveal generous storage space for seat cushions, pillows, garden tools and barbecue accessories. This way, everything that would otherwise be left lying about disappears behind a neat façade – and the terrace looks twice as tidy: no view in from the outside, no clutter in sight.
Unlike lightweight privacy screens made of fabric or thin wood, the patio cabinet is a solid, freestanding piece of furniture. The structure stands securely on adjustable feet that compensate for any unevenness in the patio flooring. The solid HPL surface remains opaque, does not warp and does not flap in the wind – a privacy screen that looks just as good after years as it did on the first day.
The cabinet is made from HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) by Trespa – a material originally used in façade construction and designed to withstand long-term exposure to the elements. It is UV-resistant, frost-proof and rainproof: the surface does not fade, dirt is washed away by the rain, and it never needs to be painted or oiled. Seat cushions and upholstery remain dry inside and can be stored outdoors all year round. It is estimated to have a lifespan of around 50 years – the privacy screen will not age any faster than the house itself.
For a patio cabinet to function as a boundary partition, its height, width and depth must be precisely correct – in relation to the patio, the boundary line and local regulations for privacy screening along the boundary. We therefore design our garden cupboards to fit perfectly: from a narrow tall cupboard to a space-defining cupboard wall, as in this project. Just how versatile the patio cupboard concept is is also demonstrated by our reference project for a patio cupboard for seat cushions in Stuttgart-Killesberg.
Especially at the property boundary, the appearance matters to both sides: choose a shade from over 250 HPL colours and finishes that suits both halves of the house – from white through steel grey and anthracite to a wood-effect finish. We’ll send you free HPL colour samples to your home in advance. Every cabinet is designed in-house and manufactured in Germany – with delivery across Europe and installation available on request. Over 2,000 completed projects and a 5-star rating from more than 220 Google reviews speak to the care we take.
