An extension at the front entrance has to do more than a freestanding garden shed: it should blend in with the existing architecture, keep the entrance clear and, ideally, fulfil additional functions. This bespoke project combines three functions in a single structure – storage space, a passageway and a canopy over the front door. What might sound like a compromise looks seamless in situ: precisely tailored in width and height, built directly onto the house entrance.
The key requirement: the entrance area of the house needed to be covered as well. The garden shed has therefore been designed to be 3.05 m high, so that the lower edge of the roof overhang sits neatly above the front door. This creates a continuous canopy that protects the area in front of the front door from rain and visually connects the garden shed and the main house. Whether you’re looking for your keys in the morning or carrying shopping in the evening, you’ll stay dry – and the canopy doesn’t look like an afterthought, but rather a natural part of the building.
In addition, a passageway runs through the building – the route from the entrance to the garden goes directly through the garden shed rather than round the outside. To the left and right of this, there is ample storage space for garden tools, pushchairs, bicycles or crates of drinks: everything within easy reach at the most frequently used spot on the property. Our case study of a garden shed with two doors at the front and rear demonstrates how the passageway principle works in a freestanding design.
This design was challenging both in terms of planning and assembly: all height and width measurements had to be precisely coordinated so that the passageway, canopy and storage space functioned as a single structure – and the whole thing fitted flush against the existing house. It is precisely for situations like this that we design every garden shed to measure: first, the site is surveyed; then the floor plan, elevation and connection details are drawn up.
The house entrance is particularly exposed to the elements – driving rain, sun and road salt in winter. The façade of the extension is therefore made of HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) from Trespa: UV-resistant, frost-proof and rainproof. The surface does not fade, dirt is washed away by the rain, and it never needs painting – it is designed to last around 50 years. The load-bearing substructure, made from C24 solid structural timber, is structurally calculated in accordance with Eurocode 5.
Colour coordination is particularly important for extensions: choose from over 250 HPL colours and finishes to find the shade that matches your façade, front door and window frames – we’ll send colour samples to your home in advance, free of charge. We design every garden shed ourselves and manufacture it in Germany – with delivery across Europe and on-site assembly available on request. Over 2,000 completed projects and a 5-star rating from more than 220 Google reviews speak to the care we take.
