A garden shed with two doors at the front and rear solves a layout issue familiar to many homeowners: the path from the street into the back garden passes through a narrow gap between the house and the boundary – and that is precisely where storage space is lacking. This project in anthracite shows how both needs can be met. Thanks to the two opposing doors, the path leads straight through the garden shed: sheltered from the weather, dry and without having to go round the building. At the same time, space is created inside for garden tools, cushions and accessories – exactly where you need them in everyday life.
The position between the house and the hedge has been deliberately chosen. The garden shed screens off the side facing the neighbour and defines the transition between the two garden areas without visually constricting the garden. The cubic shape echoes the clean lines of the house’s architecture, whilst the green hedge provides a vibrant contrast.
With a floor area of 300 × 250 cm and a height of 245 cm, the garden shed makes full use of the narrow space. The existing cellar shaft was a key consideration in this design: the garden shed ends exactly in front of the shaft, ensuring that daylight can still reach the cellar. At the same time, the space between the house and the hedge is utilised as effectively as possible – no wasted space, no dead corners. This is precisely where the advantage of a bespoke design comes into its own: whilst off-the-shelf garden sheds fail to fit in such tight spaces or leave unused areas, we design every garden shed to measure, down to the last centimetre, to suit the specific conditions of your plot – including the position of the front and rear doors, the roof overhang and the wall layout.
The outer cladding of this garden shed is made from HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) by Trespa – the material that characterises all DESIGA products. HPL is weatherproof, UV-resistant and frost-proof: The surface does not fade in the sun, and rain simply washes away any dirt. There is no need for painting, sanding or impregnation – an HPL garden shed is maintenance-free and designed to last around 50 years. Behind this lies a load-bearing substructure made of C24 solid structural timber, statically calculated in accordance with Eurocode 5. The timber is protected by the structure itself – using adjustable feet and under-floor ventilation rather than chemicals.
Both doors reflect the garden shed’s clean-lined, minimalist design. The flat roof emphasises the cubic silhouette. Those who use the passageway in their daily lives open one door in the morning and leave the house on the other side into the garden – the storage space in between remains accessible and tidy at all times. Our designer garden shed with a walk-through in Bamberg features a similar solution: there, too, the building connects two areas of the plot whilst creating generous storage space.
A walk-through garden shed is used every day – this places higher demands on it than a simple tool shed. The door widths are designed so that even a wheelbarrow or bicycle can pass through comfortably, and the adjustable feet compensate for any unevenness in the ground, ensuring that both door thresholds are level. It is also important to consider boundary clearances and the rules regarding planning permission, which vary by federal state – you’ll find guidance on this in our garden shed guide, and we take these points into account right from the start of the planning process.
Whether you choose two hinged doors, a sliding door or a combination of both: you are free to decide on the number and position of the doors during the planning stage. Good to know: our sliding doors run on the inside and, due to their design, are set back by around 6 cm – we take this into account when planning the layout from the very start. You also have a choice of colours – in addition to the anthracite shown here, over 250 HPL colours and finishes are available, ranging from light natural tones to deep black. So that you can assess how they’ll look on your own home, we’ll send HPL colour samples to your home free of charge. We design all our garden sheds ourselves, and they are manufactured in Germany – with on-site assembly available on request. Over 2,000 completed projects and a 5-out-of-5-star rating from more than 220 Google reviews speak to the care we take.
