A cladding for the heat pump fulfils two purposes at once: it removes the technical unit’s visual dominance in the garden or on the house wall – whilst at the same time protecting it from the elements and damage. This project features a grey HPL enclosure with integrated ventilation slots: clean, cubic and positioned so naturally that it appears to be an integral part of the building’s architecture. Where a white technical unit with a fan once caught the eye, there now stands a calm, linear structure in grey.
The most important rule for any heat pump enclosure is this: the unit must be able to breathe freely. An air-source heat pump draws in large volumes of outside air and expels it once it has been cooled – if this airflow is obstructed, efficiency drops. This is precisely why ventilation slots are integrated into this enclosure, ensuring the necessary airflow without the cladding losing any of its visual impact or robustness. During the planning stage, we automatically factor in the internal clearances around the unit – this ensures there is sufficient space between the heat pump and the cladding for air circulation, whilst also guaranteeing access for maintenance by technicians.
Heat pumps installed outdoors are visible and accessible – and therefore also a potential target in urban areas. A solidly constructed HPL enclosure significantly raises the barrier to tampering: anyone standing in front of the cladding immediately realises that nothing here is easy to move. If the enclosure is also anchored to the foundation, this provides effective protection against theft and vandalism. Added to this is protection from the elements in everyday use: hail, leaves and dirt strike the cladding rather than the unit’s fins.
The cladding is made from HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) by Trespa – the material that characterises all DESIGA products. It is UV-resistant, frost-proof and rainproof: the grey surface does not fade in the sun, and any dirt is washed away by the next rainfall. With an impact resistance of over 40 newtons, the material can even withstand hailstorms without any damage. There is no need for painting or further treatment – it is designed to last for around 50 years. The cladding therefore does not age any faster than the house on which it is installed.
Heat pumps vary considerably in their dimensions depending on the manufacturer. Our cladding for heat pumps and air conditioning units is therefore always made to the exact dimensions of the unit – regardless of the manufacturer, whether it is narrow, wide, stocky or tall. Simply enter the dimensions of your unit into the configurator; the necessary internal clearances and the price are calculated automatically, with or without a rear panel and slats as required. Our reference project featuring a tall, bespoke heat pump cladding demonstrates just how flexible the system is, even with unusual formats.
The grey shown here blends discreetly between the façade and the landscaping. If you’d like to match the cladding more closely to your home, you can choose from over 250 HPL colours and finishes – ranging from white to steel grey and anthracite, right through to a wood-effect finish. We’ll send you free HPL colour samples to your home in advance. We develop every cladding panel ourselves and manufacture it in Germany – with delivery across Europe and installation available on request. Over 2,000 completed projects and a 5-star rating from more than 220 Google reviews are testament to the care we take.
