One hailstorm can do what years of normal weather cannot: bend the fins of an outdoor unit, leave permanent dents in its casing and turn a tidy installation into an eyesore. This project shows hail protection for heat pumps in its most convincing form – an anthracite surround that encloses the appliance completely, looks deliberately modern rather than defensive, and opens up for service access in a few simple steps. Protection, in other words, that never gets in the way. The dark, clean-lined body reads as a considered piece of garden design – yet its real job is done on the day the sky turns white.
For maximum resistance to hail and severe weather, this surround uses 13 mm Trespa HPL – considerably more substantial than the usual thin cladding sheets. Hailstones, falling branches and driving rain strike the thick panel instead of the sensitive fins of the unit behind it – the appliance sits inside its own solid shell. The material is UV-resistant and frost-proof as well: the anthracite does not fade, rain washes dirt off the surface, and repainting is never on the agenda. The calculated service life is around 50 years.
The surround is engineered so that its own weight of roughly 90 kg holds it firmly in place – as a rule, no additional fixing is required. No drilling into the terrace, no ground anchors: the unit is positioned once and stays exactly where it belongs, even in strong wind. For installation that means minimal effort and no damage to the surface it stands on; for everyday life it means a solution you never have to think about again once it is in place.
Good protection must never obstruct maintenance. In a service situation this surround releases the appliance from all sides, without laborious dismantling or realignment afterwards. That saves time at every engineer visit and keeps servicing costs predictable – and it means the protection can stay in place all year round, uncompromised, instead of being taken apart and reassembled for every small intervention. The air routing is planned in from the start too: louvres and calculated internal clearances keep the air paths of the heat pump completely free. In everyday use nothing has to be removed, stored or remembered – the surround simply remains part of the garden, whatever the season.
Heat pumps differ considerably from one manufacturer to the next, which is why made-to-measure heat pump covers from DESIGA are always fabricated to the dimensions of the individual appliance – with or without a rear panel and louvres, as you prefer. In the online configurator you enter the measurements of your unit, and the internal clearances and the price are calculated automatically. How the same principle works for especially big installations is shown by our reference featuring a surround for a large heat pump.
The anthracite shown here is just one option: over 250 HPL colours and décors are on offer, from white through the grey spectrum to wood-effect finishes, and free colour samples are delivered to your home so you can judge the tone in real light before committing. Whether the surround should recede quietly behind the planting or set a deliberate accent against the façade remains entirely your decision.
Every DESIGA surround is developed and manufactured in Germany. It leaves the workshop fully assembled and is delivered by specialist carrier, so it is ready to use on arrival – with delivery available across Europe.
