A garden shed with a walk-through transforms a storage space into part of the pathway: instead of walking round the building, you walk straight through it. This project in Bamberg illustrates the principle in its clearest form – an HPL garden shed with a generous floor area of 300 × 300 cm and two opposing sliding doors, allowing direct access from the courtyard to the garden. The building becomes a link that connects two outdoor areas comfortably and stylishly – and noticeably shortens daily journeys around the property.

Two sliding doors, a seamless transition

The two opposing sliding doors are the key to this solution. They open wide without a door leaf swinging into the way – on both the courtyard side and the garden side. Anyone moving about with a wheelbarrow, bicycle or their hands full simply slides the door aside and walks through. Good to know for planning: our sliding doors run on the inside and, due to their design, are set back about 6 cm – we take this into account when planning the layout right from the start.

Lockable: the passageway replaces a gate and fence

An often underestimated advantage: the lockable sliding doors make an additional garden gate or fence at this point unnecessary. When closed, the garden shed forms a secure barrier between the courtyard and the garden; when open, it creates an inviting passageway. At the same time, the interior offers secure, lockable storage space for high-quality equipment – bicycles, tools, garden tools and anything else that shouldn’t be left out in the open, either in the courtyard or the garden.

HPL from Trespa: the weatherproof cladding

The outer cladding consists of HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) from Trespa – weatherproof, UV-resistant and frost-proof. The surface does not fade in the sun; rain simply washes away dirt, and there is no need for painting or waterproofing in the long term; it is estimated to have a lifespan of around 50 years. The façade is supported by a substructure made of C24 solid structural timber, statically calculated in accordance with Eurocode 5 – the timber is protected by the design featuring adjustable feet and under-ventilation, not by chemicals. A house used daily in this way remains in perfect condition and retains its attractive appearance for decades.

The 300 × 300 cm floor plan shown here offers ample storage space on both sides as well as the walk-through area.
