A bin enclosure goes one step beyond open cladding: it surrounds the bins on all sides. However used, battered or weary the wheelie bins behind it may look – the viewer sees none of it, ever. This modern four-bin version for 240-litre bins in taupe reads instead almost like a freestanding design object in its own right: a confident, calm cube that relies on quality first and lets the looks follow from it. Where a screen merely interrupts the view, the fully enclosed body replaces it: what the street sees is not hidden bins but a deliberate, well-proportioned volume.
In daily use, the decisive move happens on top. The flip lids on the upper side raise the lids of the bins beneath them as they open – so the bag travels into the bin with one hand, without any lid juggling and without touching the bin itself. Closed again, the top surface returns to a clean plane, and nothing hints at the mechanics beneath it. It is the kind of engineering you stop noticing after a week – which is precisely the point of good everyday design.
When the bins have to go out, the practical flap doors at the front take over: they open wide, the bins roll out comfortably and roll back in just as easily afterwards. Two dedicated openings for two different tasks – filling from above, emptying at the front – keep both movements short, and keep the enclosed body looking untouched in between. No propping, no lifting bins over edges, no doors left ajar – the routine is as tidy as the appearance.
The cladding consists of weatherproof HPL (high-pressure laminate) by Trespa, carried by a resilient substructure – together an exceptionally sturdy home for the bins. The material is UV-resistant, frost-proof and rain-proof: the taupe surface does not fade in the sun, and the next rain washes any dirt away. Painting, oiling or sealing is permanently unnecessary; the calculated service life is around 50 years. With an impact resistance of over 40 newtons, the structure is unimpressed by the daily handling of four heavy bins. The substructure keeps the geometry true over the years, so lids meet their frames and doors meet their joints exactly as they did on day one.
The colour choice makes this project special. Taupe – a warm grey-brown – mediates between light render, natural stone and planting, exactly where pure grey can feel technical. The enclosed volume becomes a designed element of the front garden rather than a utility structure. If you lean elsewhere, over 250 HPL colours and décors are available, from white via steel grey and anthracite through to wood looks – and free HPL colour samples are posted to your home in advance.
Plot and bin count decide the right build: the closed box with doors and flip lids as in this project, an open version with a screen for the backyard, or the combination with a letterbox and parcel compartment at the entrance. Common to all variants is the principle – the bins disappear completely from view yet stay usable with a single movement. Every size from a single bin up to four is available in our modern bin store collection, made to measure for 120-litre and 240-litre bins, and the planning accounts for bin dimensions, door swing and the route to the street. How a freestanding layout for two neighbouring households can look is shown by one of our references.
