A balcony cupboard has to pull off quite a feat: creating more storage space without taking up any of the already limited floor space. This project shows how it can be done – with a tall, slim outdoor cupboard made of HPL, which fits neatly into a corner and, despite its small footprint, holds a surprising amount. Instead of boxes, baskets and a crammed cupboard, there’s now a designated place for everything you need on the balcony – right where it’s needed.
The weather-resistant HPL surface reliably protects the contents from rain and snow. Seat cushions and upholstery can therefore safely remain outside all year round – there’s no need to keep lugging them back and forth to the cellar or storage room. The integrated ventilation inlets ensure sufficient air circulation inside, and the shelves keep everything tidy: cushions at the top, plant pots and accessories in the middle, and water for watering at the bottom. The built-in drawer is particularly handy for stowing away all those little balcony bits and bobs – gardening gloves, a lighter, rags, tea lights or placemats.
Lockability is a key consideration, particularly on balconies in blocks of flats. This balcony cupboard is solidly built and lockable – tools, barbecue accessories or personal belongings are safely stowed away, even if the balcony is accessible to neighbours or tradespeople. The doors open smoothly, revealing the tidy interior, whilst the exterior remains clean and uncluttered: clean joints, straight edges, no visible fittings.
The cupboard is made from HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) by Trespa – the material that characterises all DESIGA products. It is weatherproof, UV-resistant and frost-proof: the surface does not fade in the sun, and rain simply washes away any dirt. Unlike furniture made from wood or coated metal, the cupboard never needs to be painted, oiled or re-treated – it is designed to last around 50 years. An HPL balcony cupboard is therefore a purchase that will withstand house moves, renovations and many summers.
The tall cupboard shown here is just one of many options. Our outdoor tall cupboard makes the most of the vertical space when floor space is limited; shallower sideboards serve as both storage units and plant stands. And if standard dimensions don’t fit – for example, due to a sloping ceiling, a water connection or a recess – we can make bespoke units. Our case study of a bespoke balcony cupboard in Ehingen demonstrates just how precisely a balcony cupboard can be fitted into tight spaces.
Whether you prefer a subtle tone-on-tone match with the façade or a bold accent: you can choose from over 250 HPL colours and finishes, ranging from white through steel grey and anthracite to a wood-effect finish. We’ll send you free HPL colour samples to your home in advance so you can assess the effect directly on your balcony. Every cupboard is designed in-house and manufactured in Germany – with delivery across Europe and installation available on request. Over 2,000 completed projects and a 5-star rating from more than 220 Google reviews show that this attention to detail pays off.
