Black against green: how the dark cube orders the garden

It is in front of hedges and trees that black plays to its full strength. The foliage appears more intense, flowers gain depth, and the building itself steps back and brings order to the garden. Instead of competing with the planting, the black shed becomes its calm backdrop – a role that brightly coloured garden buildings can never quite manage. The whole garden looks tidier, more composed and altogether more deliberate.

Black outdoors: why only the right material can do it

Black façades are considered the supreme discipline outdoors. Painted timber bleaches in the sun, turns grey and demands a fresh coat every few years – and with black, every sign of fading shows more than with any other colour. The HPL panels of this garden shed are different: coloured through and UV-resistant, so the black stays rich and saturated. Rain washes off dust and pollen, and painting is never required. The surface is also impact-resistant and frost-proof – designed for a service life of around 50 years.

Made to measure: the cube follows the plot

Like almost all of our projects, this black shed was built as a made-to-measure design: footprint, height and door position were planned around the space between the terrace and the plot boundary. Nothing is squeezed in, nothing wasted – the building uses exactly the space the garden offers and leaves the rest free for living. Garden furniture, tools and equipment disappear behind the black façade, and with them the visual clutter that so often unsettles an otherwise calm garden.

Engineered construction: C24 timber to Eurocode 5

Behind the flawless black skin works the proven DESIGA construction: a load-bearing substructure of C24 structural timber, statically calculated in accordance with Eurocode 5. Adjustable feet level the building precisely, and ventilation underneath protects the timber without any chemicals. It is this quiet engineering that keeps the minimalist cube looking sharp and standing true year after year.

The palette is just as considered as the construction: black itself is one of seven neutral standard tones – the cube in anthracite is its slightly softer relative – and over 250 HPL colours and décors range from deep black through warm greys to wood looks. Free colour samples arrive at your home so the fine difference between black and near-black can be judged in your own garden light.
