A white bin store? Absolutely – and this project shows why

Can a white bin store really work outdoors, at the most hard-working spot of the house? It can – emphatically. This modern three-bin project in radiant white dismantles the assumption that bin storage has to be dark and inconspicuous. In front of a light façade and a well-kept front garden, the white unit reads as a deliberately placed piece of furniture: clear, friendly and precise. Three bins vanish behind it – and the entrance visibly gains calm and quality. Where dark tones make bin storage recede, white does something bolder: it makes order itself visible, and it reflects the light that dark units swallow.

White that stays white: HPL by Trespa

The reason white succeeds here is the material. The cladding is made from weather- and UV-proof HPL (high-pressure laminate) by Trespa: the surface neither fades nor dulls, so the unit gleams day after day as if it had just left production. It is precisely with light tones that the resilient multi-layer laminate plays out its strengths – where painted timber would yellow, flake and demand a fresh coat, the laminate simply carries on being white. Sun, rain and frost pass over the surface without leaving a trace, which is what allows the boldest of all colour choices to remain the easiest one to live with.

Care routine: a garden hose and a cloth

The upkeep effort sits at zero. If the unit gets dirty, a garden hose and a cloth are all it takes; sanding, sealing and repainting belong to the past – and with them the whole question of whether white is a sensible colour for bin storage. For a surface this exposed, that is not a small convenience but the very condition that makes a light tone practical in the first place. The next shower does half the work anyway: the closed surface lets water carry dust straight off, and what remains disappears with one wipe.

Three bins, each behind its own access

The three-bin version takes either 120-litre or 240-litre wheelie bins – enough for general waste, paper and recycling. Every bin is individually accessible, so on collection day only the bin in question rolls out. Robust in daily use

A bin unit is used every day – lid up, bag in, bin out. With an impact resistance of over 40 newtons, the HPL cladding shrugs off knocks and hail, and the closed surface absorbs neither odours nor moisture. Adjustable feet level out unevenness in the paving so that doors and lids keep closing cleanly for years. The calculated service life is around 50 years – a long time for a unit to keep looking freshly delivered, and long enough to outlast several generations of the bins inside it.
